Korea Travel Essentials — Everything to Book Before You Go (2026)

Korea Tips··By Ryan Lee

Planning a trip to Korea can feel overwhelming — there's a lot of advice out there, and half of it is outdated. This page cuts through the noise. Here's exactly what you need to sort out before you fly, in priority order, with links to our detailed guides and booking options.

Think of this as your pre-departure checklist. Bookmark it and work through it in the week before your trip.

Before You Fly (Book 1-2 Weeks Ahead)

1. Visa — Check If You Need One

Most Western passport holders get 90-day visa-free entry. But the rules change frequently — some nationalities now need K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization).

2. Accommodation — Book Early for Peak Season

Seoul hotel prices spike 50-80% during cherry blossom (late March–April) and autumn foliage (October–November). Book at least 2-4 weeks ahead during these periods.

3. SIM Card or eSIM — Get Data Sorted

You need mobile data for Naver Map (essential for navigation), Kakao T (taxis), translation apps, and everything else. Buy an eSIM before you fly or pick up a SIM at the airport.

5. T-money Card — Your Transit & Payment Card

Buy at any convenience store in arrivals (₩4,000 for the card, load ₩20,000+ cash). Works on all subways, buses, taxis, and at convenience stores. Or pre-order a preloaded version online.

A prepaid card that works where foreign credit cards don't — self-ordering kiosks, small restaurants, convenience stores. Also works as T-money for transit. The most useful single item you can get.
