Udo Island — What Locals & Foreigners Really Say (2026)

Directory··By Ryan Lee

우도 (Udo Island) is a tiny island off Jeju's east coast — white coral beaches, turquoise water, and 2 million visitors a year. Instagram made it famous, and the classic experience is riding a scooter around the island. But there's a major problem foreigners discover too late: scooter rentals are nearly impossible for non-Koreans.

What Locals Say 🇰🇷

"삼륜차는 사고가 많이 나는 편. 오토바이 경험 없으면 조작하기 어려움"

(Three-wheelers have a lot of accidents. If you've never ridden a motorcycle, operating one is difficult)

— Korean safety guide · Source: Brunch

"웬만하면 순환 관광버스를 타는 게 좋음. 관광지에 세워주고 안전하게 구경 가능"

(It's better to take the tour bus. Stops at each attraction and you can sightsee safely)

— Korean travel tip, 2025

"서빈백사 하얀 모래사장과 검멀레 해변의 검은 모래가 대표 명소. 우도봉에서 전경 보는 것도 좋음"

(Seobin white sand beach and Geommeolle black sand beach are the signature spots. The view from Udo Peak is great too)

"땅콩 아이스크림이 우도 명물. 꼭 먹어보세요"

(Peanut ice cream is Udo's signature treat. Must try)

What Foreigners Say 🌍

"Rental companies will NOT rent scooters to non-Koreans. Staff just waved us away. You need a Korean licence or motorcycle international licence — normal car IDP doesn't work."

— TripAdvisor review, 2025 · Source: TripAdvisor

"Electric bikes are the best alternative. Unimpeded views, electric assistance makes hills easy, and no licence needed."

"Totally worth your time. Best nature, fresh air, photogenic views. You can climb peaks, swim, and see horses — all in one day."

— Wandering Traveler, 2025 · Source: Wandering Traveler

"Catch the ferry before 9am for quality time before crowds arrive. Ferries from Seongsan port every 30 minutes."

Recommended — How to Get Around

Cultural context: Udo is a farming and fishing island that became a tourist destination almost by accident. The locals are fishermen and farmers, not tourism professionals. The scooter rental issue for foreigners isn't discrimination — Korean traffic law requires a specific licence class for powered two-wheelers, and rental shops face liability. Don't take it personally. Electric bikes and the tour bus are genuinely good alternatives that locals also use. The island is small enough that you can see everything in 3-4 hours regardless of transport.

전기자전거 (Electric Bike) — Best for Foreigners

No licence needed. Electric assist handles the hills. Unimpeded ocean views. Multiple rental shops near the ferry dock. The best way to experience Udo as a foreigner.

💰 2시간 ~15,000원 · 📍 Ferry dock area

순환 관광버스 (Tour Bus)

Hop-on hop-off bus that stops at every attraction. Safe, easy, and no navigation needed. Get off at beaches and viewpoints, catch the next bus when ready.

💰 ~5,000원 · Runs throughout the day

서빈백사 (Seobin Baeksa — White Coral Beach)

Udo's most famous beach — white coral sand and crystal-clear turquoise water. Looks tropical despite being in Korea. The peanut ice cream shops are right here.

Before You Go — Key Warnings

  • Scooter rental: foreigners cannot rent. You need a Korean licence or motorcycle IDP (not car IDP). Don't plan your trip around scooter access — use electric bikes or the tour bus instead.
  • Catch the ferry before 9am. From Seongsan Port, every 30 minutes, 8am-5pm. Early = fewer crowds, better photos.
  • 3-4 hours is enough. The island is small. Electric bike covers everything comfortably. Don't plan a full day unless you want extensive beach time.
  • Try peanut ice cream. It's Udo's signature — made from locally grown peanuts. Multiple shops near Seobin Beach.
  • Weather dependent. Ferries may be cancelled in rough seas. Check conditions before heading to Seongsan Port.
  • Combine with Seongsan Ilchulbong. The ferry leaves from Seongsan — do the sunrise peak hike early morning, then ferry to Udo mid-morning.

How to get there: Ferry from Seongsan Port (성산포항). 15-min ride. Runs every 30 min, 8am-5pm. Entry fee ~5,500원 (round trip ferry).
