Cultural context: Suwon tongdak (통닭, whole fried chicken) predates the modern Korean fried chicken craze by decades — this is the OG. The chicken street near the fortress has been serving whole deep-fried chickens since the 1970s, long before Kyochon or BBQ existed. Locals are equally proud of their fortress and their chicken. The fortress was built by King Jeongjo in the 1790s as an act of filial piety for his father — it's one of the best-preserved fortifications in East Asia and the entire 5.7km wall is walkable.

The full 5.7km fortress wall walk takes 2–3 hours and passes through four main gates, multiple watchtowers, and cannon platforms. Free to walk the walls. Start at Paldalmun Gate for the best route.

A street of restaurants all serving whole fried chicken near Hwaseong Fortress. Order a whole tongdak with pickled radish and beer. Yongseongtongdak and Jinjutongdak are local favourites.

화성행궁 (Hwaseong Haenggung Palace)
The temporary palace King Jeongjo used when visiting his father's tomb. Quieter and less touristy than Seoul's palaces. Beautiful courtyard and traditional architecture. Hanbok rental available nearby.

Before You Go — Key Tips
- Wear comfortable shoes. The fortress wall walk is 5.7km with uphill sections. Sneakers or hiking shoes are essential.
- Start at Paldalmun Gate. This is the southern gate and the traditional starting point for the wall walk. Most locals go clockwise.
- Chicken street after the walk. Plan your fortress walk first, then reward yourself with tongdak. The chicken street is right next to the fortress area.
- Visit Suwon Year events. The 2026–2027 Visit Suwon Year includes special fortress night illumination events, cultural performances, and discounted entry to attractions.
- Getting there. KTX from Seoul Station to Suwon Station takes 30 minutes. Subway Line 1 (Bundang Line) takes about 60 minutes from central Seoul.
