Sokcho & Seoraksan — What Locals & Foreigners Really Say (2026)

Directory··By Ryan Lee

(Seoraksan & Sokcho) — Seoraksan is Korea's most dramatic national park: jagged granite peaks, waterfalls, and ancient temples. Sokcho is the coastal city at its doorstep, famous for seafood and the central market. Together they're Korea's best nature + food combo — but trail difficulty varies wildly.

What Locals Say 🇰🇷

"전문 산악인도 설악산 난이도 높다고 생각함. 대청봉은 체력 강한 사람도 금방 체력 고갈"

(Even professional mountaineers consider Seoraksan difficult. Daecheongbong Peak exhausts even strong hikers quickly)

— Korean hiking community, 2025

"당일치기는 오색 코스(거리 짧음)나 한계령 코스(상승고도 낮음)가 인기. 초보자는 케이블카+권금성 추천"

(For day trips: Osaek trail (shortest distance) or Hangyeryeong trail (less elevation gain) are popular. Beginners should take the cable car to Gwongeumseong)

— Korean hiking guide, 2025

"가을 단풍 시즌이 최고지만 사람도 최고로 많음. 평일 새벽 출발이 필수"

(Autumn foliage season is the best but also the most crowded. Weekday pre-dawn departure is essential)

— Korean travel blog, 2025

"2026년부터 설악동에서 등산화, 등산스틱, 배낭 무상 대여 가능. 장비 없어도 갈 수 있음"

(From 2026, free rental of hiking boots, poles, and backpacks at Seorak-dong. You can go without your own gear)

— Gangwon-do tourism, 2026

What Foreigners Say 🌍

"One of the few Korean parks where you can stack big-mountain drama, hot springs, and cheap city beds in one tight, low-effort loop."

— Hunting for Bliss, 2025 · Source: Hunting for Bliss

"The jump from easy to medium trails is subtle. The leap to hard is significant — expect 2 to 5 times more effort in distance and elevation."

— The Girl with a Big Bag, 2025 · Source: The Girl with a Big Bag

"Arrive by 7am and you'll beat the vast majority of crowds. Well-marked trails make navigation straightforward — no guided tour needed."

— TripAdvisor review, 2025 · Source: TripAdvisor

"Ulsanbawi Trail is essentially all stairs — 808 steps to the top. Difficult but the panoramic view of the peaks and ocean is the best in Seoraksan."

Cultural context: Hiking is Korea's national pastime — on weekends, Korean ajummas and ajeossis in full hiking gear dominate the trails. They move fast, share food with strangers, and drink makgeolli at the summit. Korean hiking culture is social and generous. Don't be surprised if someone offers you kimbap or fruit — accept it with both hands and a thank you. After the hike, Sokcho Central Market seafood is the reward. That's the full Korean mountain experience.

(Gwongeumseong Cable Car)

Cable car to a fortress viewpoint. Stunning views with minimal effort. Perfect for non-hikers or families. The most popular "easy" option at Seoraksan.

30 min total

Medium: 울산바위 (Ulsanbawi Rock Trail)

808 stairs to the top. Challenging but manageable for fit visitors. The panoramic view of peaks and ocean is considered the best in Seoraksan. 3-4 hours round trip.

💰 Free (park entry free) · ⏱ 3-4 hours round trip

After the Hike: 속초중앙시장 (Sokcho Central Market)

The reward for your hike. Fresh seafood, dakgangjeong (sweet fried chicken — Sokcho's famous version), and sundae (blood sausage). Featured on Korea's top 100 tourist list for 2025-26.

  • Autumn foliage (mid-Oct) is peak. Also peak crowds. Go on a weekday and start before 7am.
