Jeju City — What Locals & Foreigners Really Say (2026)

Directory··By Ryan Lee

(Jeju City) is the gateway to Jeju Island — and most tourists rush straight through to the coast. That's a mistake. Jeju City is the black pork (흑돼지) capital of Korea, home to Dongmun Traditional Market, and where Jeju's unique food culture is most concentrated. One night here for BBQ and market food is worth it.

What Locals Say 🇰🇷

"흑돼지는 제주 가면 반드시 먹어야 해요. 육지 돼지랑 확실히 달라요"

(Black pork is THE must-eat on Jeju — it's noticeably different from mainland pork)

— Naver Blog review, Jan 2026

"동문시장은 관광객보다 로컬 맛집이 많아요"

(Dongmun Market has more local food gems than tourist spots)

— Korean visitor review, Feb 2026

"공항 근처 식당은 비싸요. 구시가지 동네 맛집으로 가세요"

(Airport area restaurants are overpriced — go to the local neighbourhood spots in old downtown)

— Naver Blog review, Mar 2026

"흑돼지 + 해산물 코스 식당이 인기 많아요. 한 곳에서 다 먹을 수 있어서"

— Korean local review, Feb 2026

What Foreigners Say 🌍

"Black pork BBQ was the highlight of our entire Jeju trip. The meat is fattier and more flavourful than regular pork — grilled over charcoal, it's incredible."

— TripAdvisor review, 2025

"Dongmun Market feels more local than touristy. Great for picking up hallabong oranges, dried seafood snacks, and trying street food."

— Travel blog review, 2026

"Rent a car to explore Jeju properly — buses are limited and schedules are confusing. The airport car rental process is easy."

— Reddit r/koreatravel, 2025

"Don't eat near the airport — everything is overpriced. Drive 15 minutes into town and the same meal is half the price."

— Reddit r/koreatravel, 2026

Recommended — Where to Actually Go

These spots are consistently praised by both locals and visitors.

Cultural context: Jeju City is a transit hub, not a destination — most tourists rush to the coast. But staying one night in Jeju City for black pork BBQ and Dongmun Market is worth it. Jeju locals are proud of their unique food culture — black pork (흑돼지), hairtail fish (갈치), and abalone (전복) are the holy trinity of Jeju cuisine. The black pork here is genuinely different from mainland Korea — the pigs are a heritage breed raised on Jeju, and the meat has a distinct sweetness and texture you won't find anywhere else.

(Heukdwaeji Street — Black Pork BBQ Restaurants)

A cluster of black pork BBQ restaurants near old downtown Jeju City. Multiple options competing on quality. Look for restaurants grilling over charcoal (숯불) rather than gas for the best flavour.

Before You Go — Key Tips

  • Rent a car. Jeju's bus network is limited and slow. A rental car is almost essential for exploring beyond Jeju City. International driving permits are accepted.
  • Avoid airport-area restaurants. Drive 15 minutes into town for the same food at half the price. Airport proximity = tourist markup.
  • Black pork dinner tip: Order at least 2 servings (2인분) per person. One serving is small by Korean BBQ standards. Pair with soju — it's the local way.
  • Dongmun Market has a night market. The evening section (야시장) runs from about 6pm and has different vendors from the daytime market. Worth visiting both.
  • Weather is different from mainland. Jeju can be windy and rainy even when Seoul is sunny. Pack a light rain jacket regardless of season.
