Gyeongbokgung Palace — What Locals & Foreigners Really Say (2026)
경복궁 (Gyeongbokgung Palace) is Seoul's #1 attraction — the largest of the Five Grand Palaces, built in 1395. Millions visit every year, and hanbok rental has become the defining experience. But there are hidden costs, timing tricks, and etiquette rules that most visitors discover too late.

What Locals Say 🇰🇷
"한복 치마가 길어서 신발은 잘 안 보임. 예쁜 것보다 편한 운동화나 단화를 신는 게 최고"
(The hanbok skirt is long so shoes aren't visible. Comfortable sneakers or flats are better than pretty shoes)

"경복궁역 근처 대여점 가격은 큰 차이 없음. 흥정보다 디자인이나 원단의 질을 따져보는 게 나음"
(Rental shop prices near the station are similar. Better to compare fabric quality and design rather than bargain)
— Naver Blog review, 2025
"청바지에 저고리만 입으면 무료입장 불가. 상하의 모두 한복이어야 함"
(Just wearing a jeogori top with jeans won't get you free entry. You need both top and bottom hanbok)

"주말과 공휴일은 사전 예약 필수. 비 오는 날은 피하세요 — 한복 치마 젖으면 무거워지고 걷기 불편"
(Weekends and holidays require advance booking. Avoid rainy days — wet hanbok skirts get heavy and hard to walk in)

What Foreigners Say 🌍
"Didn't realise there's a difference between traditional and themed hanbok. I picked a 'themed' one and was told I needed to change to traditional for free palace entry — or pay extra."
— Lemon8 review, 2025 · Source: Lemon8
"Additional charges for accessories — bags, hats, shoes were 3,000–8,000 won each. Clarify if accessories are included before picking them up."

"The guard changing ceremony at 10am and 2pm is absolutely worth timing your visit around. It's free and only takes 20 minutes."
— TripAdvisor review, 2025 · Source: TripAdvisor
"Allow several hours — between choosing the hanbok, fitting, hair styling, and actually exploring the palace, it's easily a half-day activity."

Recommended — Hanbok Rentals & Nearby
Trusted rentals with transparent pricing and good reviews.
Cultural context: Hanbok rental shops line the streets near Gyeongbokgung Station — there are dozens. Don't stress about finding "the best one" — quality and prices are similar (15,000–30,000 won for 4 hours). The real trap is hidden accessory charges and the traditional vs themed hanbok confusion. Staff are usually young, speak some English, and will help you dress. It's a fun, lighthearted experience — not formal or intimidating.
한복남 (Hanboknam)

Before You Go — Key Tips
- Free entry with hanbok. But it must be TRADITIONAL hanbok — full top (jeogori) and bottom (chima/baji). Jeans + hanbok top = you pay 3,000원.
- Ask about accessories before picking them. Bags, hats, hairpins, and shoes are often charged separately (3,000–8,000원 each). Clarify upfront.
- Traditional vs themed hanbok. "Themed" (fantasy/historical drama style) hanbok does NOT qualify for free palace entry. Ask for "전통 한복" specifically.
- Wear comfortable shoes. The palace grounds are huge. Your shoes won't show under the long skirt anyway — wear sneakers.
- Skip rainy days. Wet hanbok skirts become heavy and miserable. Check weather before booking.
- Closed Tuesdays. The palace is closed every Tuesday. No exceptions.
- Free entry every last Wednesday of the month (Culture Day) — no hanbok needed.
🚇 How to get there: Gyeongbokgung Station (경복궁역) Line 3, Exit 5. Palace entrance is 2 min walk.
