Gangnam & COEX — What Locals & Foreigners Really Say (2026)

Directory··By Ryan Lee

(Gangnam & COEX) — PSY's "Gangnam Style" made it the most famous district name in Korea. But most foreigners arrive and wonder: where's the excitement? The reality is that Gangnam is Seoul's business district, not a tourist playground — and knowing where to look makes all the difference.

What Locals Say 🇰🇷

"강남은 관광지가 아니라 비즈니스 지구. 볼거리를 기대하면 실망할 수 있음"

(Gangnam is a business district, not a tourist area. If you expect sightseeing, you may be disappointed)

— Korean travel review, 2025

"별마당도서관은 사진 찍기엔 좋은데 실제로는 쇼핑몰 안에 있는 작은 공간. 와이드앵글 사진에 속지 마세요"

(Starfield Library is good for photos but it's actually a small space inside a shopping mall. Don't be fooled by wide-angle lens photos)

— Namu Wiki review, 2025

"이른 시간이나 늦은 시간에 가면 한가하고 인생사진 가능. 주말 낮은 발디딜 틈 없음"

(Go early morning or late evening for empty shots. Weekend afternoons are impossibly packed)

— Korean photography tip, 2025

"강남역 주변 맛집은 진짜 많음. 관광보다 맛집 탐방으로 가면 만족도 높음"

(There are genuinely great restaurants around Gangnam Station. Go for food exploration rather than sightseeing — much higher satisfaction)

— Korean food blog, 2025

What Foreigners Say 🌍

"Expected the library to be bigger. Everyone takes wide-angle photos making it look massive online. It's literally inside a shopping mall. 10-20 minute stop at most."

"Got beautiful photos and it's undeniably gorgeous. But as a unique experience? Not super impressed. More beautiful than useful."

— TripAdvisor review, 2025 · Source: TripAdvisor

"Pair Starfield Library with other Gangnam stops — Bongeunsa Temple is 5 minutes away and is genuinely peaceful. Don't make a special trip just for the library."

— US News Travel, 2025 · Source: US News

"COEX Aquarium was actually the highlight for me — better than expected. Good for rainy days or when you need a break from temple-hopping."

— Travel blog review, 2025

Recommended — What's Actually Worth Doing

How to make Gangnam work as a visitor.

Cultural context: Gangnam is where wealthy Koreans live, work, and eat. It's not designed for tourists — it's designed for professionals with expense accounts. The upside: the restaurant quality is exceptional because they serve demanding locals, not tourists. The downside: there are no traditional sights. Think of Gangnam as a food and shopping destination, not a sightseeing one, and you'll enjoy it much more.

(Starfield Library)

13-metre tall bookshelves, stunning architecture. Real but smaller than photos suggest. 10-20 minutes for photos, then explore the COEX Mall. Best time: early morning or after 9pm for empty shots.

(Bongeunsa Temple)

1,200-year-old Buddhist temple hidden behind COEX. A genuine oasis of calm in the middle of Gangnam's skyscrapers. Free entry, temple stay programs available. 5-minute walk from the library.

(Gangnam Station Food Streets)

Some of Seoul's best restaurants cluster around Gangnam Station. Not tourist food — this is where Korean professionals eat. Korean BBQ, jjigae, Japanese ramen, and fusion dining at a level that beats most tourist areas.

Before You Go — Key Tips

  • Don't make a special trip just for Starfield Library. It's a 10-20 minute photo stop. Combine with Bongeunsa Temple and COEX Aquarium for a half-day.
  • Gangnam = food destination. Both locals and foreigners agree: the restaurants around Gangnam Station are excellent. Come for dinner, not sightseeing.
  • COEX is Asia's largest underground mall. Easy to get lost. Download the COEX Mall map app or grab a paper map at the entrance.
  • Bongeunsa is free and peaceful. 5 minutes from COEX, 1,200 years old, and practically empty on weekdays. The best-kept secret in Gangnam.
  • Gangnam Style statue: It's at Gangnam Station Exit 11. Small and easy to miss. Worth a quick photo but don't build a trip around it.

🚇 How to get there: Samseong Station (삼성역) Line 2 for COEX. Gangnam Station (강남역) Line 2 for restaurants and nightlife.
